Question

During free fall, when an object is released from rest, how does the gravitational force of the Earth affect its motion?

The correct answer is

It increases the object's velocity

In free fall the only force acting on the object (ignoring air resistance) is the gravitational force of the Earth, directed downward.

By Newton’s second law this force produces a constant downward acceleration g ≈ 9.8 m/s2.

Since the object starts from rest and the acceleration is in the direction of motion, its velocity increases by about 9.8 m/s every second (v = gt).

Hence, It increases the object's velocity.
