The correct answer is

It collects and transmits sound waves efficiently from the chest to the ears

A stethoscope has a chest piece (diaphragm/bell), flexible tubes and earpieces.

Sound waves from the heart are picked up by the chest piece and travel through the tube by multiple reflections of sound, with little spreading and loss of energy.

Because the sound is confined and guided directly to the ears, faint heart sounds are heard clearly. A simple acoustic stethoscope does not convert sound into light, does not filter high frequencies electronically and does not amplify sound electronically.

Hence, It collects and transmits sound waves efficiently from the chest to the ears.
