In a double displacement reaction, two compounds in solution swap their ions to form two new compounds, so a positive ion (cation) of one reactant pairs with a negative ion (anion) of the other.
For example, in AgNO3 + NaCl → AgCl + NaNO3, Ag+ joins Cl- and Na+ joins NO3-, i.e. positive and negative ions are exchanged.
Exchange of positive-positive or negative-negative ions is not possible, because two like-charged ions cannot bond to form a stable neutral compound.
Hence, the ions exchanged are positive - negative ions.
