Both scholars moved beyond functionalist explanations to interpret culture from the "native's point of view." They agreed that public symbols, from rituals to everyday actions, were the key to unlocking a society's worldview.

The Contrast:

Clifford Geertz viewed culture as a 'text'. For him, the task of an anthropologist was to "read" this public text through "thick description," a method of unravelling the complex layers of meaning. His analysis of the Balinese cockfight exemplifies this, showing how the event is a public story the Balinese tell themselves about status, community, and masculinity. Geertz’s focus was on interpreting the meaning held within a cultural moment.

Victor Turner, in contrast, saw culture as a dynamic 'social drama'. He was interested in process and performance, particularly in rituals. His work focused on how symbols are used to navigate social transitions and resolve conflict. Turner's key concepts of "liminality" and "communitas" describe the transformative power of rituals, where social structures are temporarily suspended and then reaffirmed. His focus was on the process of social life in action.

In essence, Geertz interpreted the meaning of culture as a static text, while Turner analyzed the process of culture as a dynamic, unfolding drama.
