Can amnesia patients recall emotional events ? Explain your answer citing research evidence.

Amnesia patients, especially those with hippocampal damage, show a striking dissociation between explicit and implicit memory. The hippocampus is vital for forming declarative memories, so such patients often cannot recall factual details or contexts of emotional events. Yet, they may still demonstrate implicit emotional responses.

Classic evidence comes from H.M., who, despite failing to consciously recall tasks, showed improvement with practice, indicating preserved implicit learning. Emotional memory research strengthens this dissociation. In fear conditioning studies, amnesic patients exposed to a neutral tone paired with a mild shock later displayed physiological fear responses (like increased skin conductance) to the tone. However, they could not consciously recall the conditioning experience.

This demonstrates that emotional memories, particularly fear-related ones, can bypass the hippocampus. The amygdala, central to emotional processing, allows implicit emotional learning even when explicit recall is impaired. Thus, amnesic patients cannot consciously remember emotional events but their bodies still “remember.”
