The correct answer is

6

\[\text{Let the oxidation number of sulfur be } x.\]\[\text{In } \mathrm{H_2S_2O_7}:\]\[\text{Hydrogen (H): } 2 \times (+1) = +2\]\[\text{Oxygen (O): } 7 \times (-2) = -14\]\[\text{Sulfur (S): } 2 \times x = 2x\]\[\text{Total oxidation number of the neutral compound = 0}\]\[2(+1) + 2x + 7(-2) = 0 \Rightarrow 2 + 2x - 14 = 0 \Rightarrow 2x - 12 = 0 \Rightarrow 2x = 12 \Rightarrow x = 6\]
