BIMSTEC stands for?
Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation
BIMSTEC stands for Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation. It was set up on 6 June 1997 through the Bangkok Declaration, first as BIST-EC (Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand Economic Cooperation).
It now has seven members around the Bay of Bengal: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand. Its permanent secretariat is in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and its charter came into force in 2024.
It is not a maritime security council, a trade body limited to Bhutan-India-Myanmar, or a security treaty; it is a regional grouping for cooperation in sectors such as trade, energy, transport, technology and counter-terrorism.
Hence, the answer is Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation.
