Question

Based on the English alphabetical order, three of the following four letter-cluster pairs are alike in a certain way and thus form a group. Which is the one that does not belong to that group?

(Note: The odd one out is not based on the number of consonants/vowels or their position in the letter-cluster.)

The correct answer is

UV - WX

Write the letters with their alphabet positions (A = 1, …, Z = 26) and compare the gaps: first to second letter, second to third letter and third to fourth letter of each pair.

PQ - SU: P (16), Q (17), S (19), U (21) → +1, +2, +2. LM - OQ: L (12), M (13), O (15), Q (17) → +1, +2, +2. EF - HJ: E (5), F (6), H (8), J (10) → +1, +2, +2.

UV - WX: U (21), V (22), W (23), X (24) → +1, +1, +1. Therefore UV - WX breaks the +1, +2, +2 pattern followed by the other three pairs.

Check: in the three alike pairs the first letter of the second cluster is three places after the first letter of the first cluster (P→S, L→O, E→H), whereas U→W is only two places, which again singles out UV - WX.

Hence, UV - WX.
