Economic activities are broadly categorized into three main sectors:

• Primary Sector: This sector includes activities directly related to the extraction and harvesting of natural resources. Key examples are agriculture, fishing, forestry, mining, and quarrying.
• Secondary Sector: This sector involves the processing of raw materials obtained from the primary sector into finished goods. It encompasses manufacturing, construction, and utilities like electricity and gas supply.
• Tertiary Sector: This sector provides services rather than producing physical goods. It includes a wide range of activities such as retail, transportation, healthcare, education, finance, hospitality, and information technology.

The contribution and employment share of these sectors change significantly as an economy progresses through different stages of development:

• Initial Stages of Developing Economies: In the early phases, developing economies heavily depend on natural resources and agriculture. A large portion of the workforce is typically engaged in farming, fishing, or mining activities falling under the primary sector. This is often due to basic subsistence needs, limited technological advancement, and the absence of widespread industrialization or service-based industries.
• Transition and Growth: As development progresses, economies tend to shift focus towards manufacturing and industrial activities, leading to growth in the secondary sector. Improved agricultural productivity can release labor for industrial employment.
• Mature Economies: In advanced economies, the tertiary sector usually becomes the largest contributor to GDP and employment, reflecting a shift towards service-based industries and technological innovation.
