'Animus Possidendi' means :

'Animus possidendi' is the mental element of possession and means the intention of the possessor to appropriate the thing to himself and exclude all others from its use. It is coupled with 'corpus possessionis' (physical control) to constitute juridical possession in Roman and modern jurisprudence. Savigny insisted on animus domini (intent to hold as owner), whereas Ihering treated it more liberally as animus to hold for oneself. Salmond likewise emphasised that possession requires an intent to appropriate the object to the exclusive use of the possessor.
