Question

\(ABC\) is a triangle right angled at \(B\). If \(AC = 8\) units, then what is the area of the triangle of maximum area?

This question was previously asked in
NDA 2 2026 GAT Question Paper (13-Sep-2026)
The correct answer is

16 square units

With the right angle at \(B\), let \(AB=x\) and \(BC=y\), so \(x^2+y^2=AC^2=64\). The area is \(\dfrac{1}{2}xy\), which by AM-GM is maximum when \(x=y\), giving \(x^2+y^2=2x^2=64\), so \(x^2=32\) and \(xy=32\). Hence the maximum area is \(\dfrac{1}{2}(32) = 16\) square units.
