Question

A place lies 90° east of Greenwich. How much ahead is its local time ?

This question was previously asked in
UPSSSC PET 2026 Question Paper (30-Oct-2026) (Shift-2)
The correct answer is

6 hours

The Earth turns through 360° of longitude in 24 hours, so local time changes by 4 minutes for every 1° of longitude. Places east of Greenwich see the Sun earlier, so their local time is ahead of Greenwich time.

Step 1 — Time difference per degree: \(\dfrac{24 \times 60}{360} = 4\) minutes.

Step 2 — For 90°: \(90 \times 4 = 360\) minutes.

Step 3 — Convert: \(\dfrac{360}{60} = 6\) hours, ahead because the place lies to the east.

3 hours would correspond to 45°, 9 hours to 135° and 12 hours to 180°, so none of them fits a 90° separation.

6 hours option is correct.
