Haryana Public Service Commission (HPSC) is responsible for taking the Haryana Civil Service (HCS) exam. The exams are taken to appoint candidates for different state government services. As per the official announcement made by the Haryana Government, the HPSC HCS exam pattern has been changed with immediate effect. According to the new rules, HPSC HCS Prelims CSAT paper (Paper-II) has been made qualifying in nature and thus the score obtained in it will not be considered for the prelims result. The candidates have to get a minimum of 33% marks to clear the CSAT paper. From this year onwards, the HPSC HCS 2020 prelims exam will be taken based on the revised exam pattern.

HCS exam is taken to appoint right candidates for the following posts:

HCS exams are conducted once in a year but the exams for this year are not conducted till now, due to the COVID-19 epidemic.

The eligibility criteria for the HCS exam is based on three parameters including age limit, educational qualification, and physical standards.

Educational Qualifications Required for HCS

  • A candidate applying for this exam must have completed his/her graduation in any discipline from a recognized university.
  • Also, the candidates in the final year of their graduation degree course are eligible to apply for the exam but the date of the final year mark sheet or score sheet must be before the closing date of HCS.
  • The degree certificate/ mark sheet should be provided to the candidates before the HCS closing date.
  • Post announcement of the exam, candidates get 30 days to complete HCS application.

HPSC Age Limit

  • Minimum Age- 21 Years
  • Maximum Age - 42 years

Age for the post of DSP

  • Minimum Age- 21 years
  • Maximum Age- 27 years

The higher age limit for the individuals belonging to unreserved category is 42 years (excluding for DSP posts). While the minimum age required to appear for the exam is 21 years. The age of the candidate will be counted from January 1 of the exam year. There is further some relaxation in the upper age limit for the candidates belonging to reserved categories:

Age Limit required and Physical Standards for D.S.P post

To apply for the post of Haryana D.S.P, the candidates must be at least 21 years old while the upper age limit for the candidates belonging to the unreserved category is 27 years.

State government of Haryana announces opening of a few vacant posts in 2020. The list of those posts in addition to their pay scale and number of seats available is mentioned below:

  • Haryana Civil Service– Total number of vacant posts include 30 (basic pay scale varies from INR 15600- INR 39100).
  • District Food and Supplies Officer – Total vacant posts are 3 (basics pay scale of INR 9300- INR 34800)

HCS 2020 Application Process

Once the notification on the application process starts is made live on the official website of the exam conducting body, candidates have to register and apply for the same. The form should be correctly filled up and submitted as there is no scope for changes after the final submission. On successful payment completion the application will be considered legitimate and complete.

HCS admit card normally releases 10-15 days before the examination. Candidates appearing in these exams can easily download the HPSC Prelims admit card by visiting the official website. All the candidates who have registered for the exam successfully can easily download the admit card. Post qualifying the HPSC Prelims Exam, admit cards for HCS Mains get released by the authorities.

  • Visit the official website to download the admit card.
  • At the site, candidates need to enter your application number or registration number and date of birth.
  • After that tap on the icon showing download Admit Card.
  • On the screen, candidates can easily see the admit card icon, they need to cross-check the details before downloading the admit card.

The Haryana Civil Service is the highest exam of the state and the application fee for the HCS application is different for the different candidates.

HPSC Exam Pattern

HCS 2020 Exam pattern

Understanding the exam pattern thoroughly will help to plan the preparation strategy accordingly. The candidates who are familiar with the exam pattern can have a smart preparation plan and make the most of the available time.

HCS Prelims Exam

First exam, HCS Prelims exam is an objective type question paper and candidates appearing for the prelims have to appear for two papers. The first paper is of General Studies I while the second is the CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test). Both papers hold weightage of 100 marks and 100 objective type questions are asked.

The maximum time allotted for each paper is two hours. For each incorrect answer, one fourth mark will be deducted. From this year onwards, the HPSC HCS prelims exam will have two papers, but the HPSC HCS result will be prepared based on the marks obtained in General Studies Paper I only. The candidates must qualify CSAT paper II.

HCS Main Exam

After the prelims exam, candidates have to appear for the HCS Main exam. This exam includes 5 compulsory conventional essay type question papers; the name of each paper, total marks and time allotted to each paper is disused below.

HCS Personality Test

This is the last stage based on which candidates will be selected for the several posts. HCS personality test holds a weightage of 75 marks. Each year, shortlisted candidates have to appear for the HCS interviews at the commission's premises located in Panchkula.

The final merit list of the shortlisted candidates for HCS exam is prepared based on the total marks of 675. The candidates need to get a good score in the HCS main written and interview as marks obtained in HCS prelims will not be considered while preparing the final merit list.

Syllabus for HCS Compulsory Subjects Paper 2

  1. English and English Essay:

Questions in English are designed to test a candidate's abilities to understand and write good English. English papers include précis writing expansion, tests in vocabulary and any other form of composition that may be suitable.

  1. Hindi and Hindi Essay (in Devnagri Script):

Translation of an English passage into Hindi.

Explanation of Hindi passage into prose & poetry in the same language.

Composition (idioms, corrections etc.)

  1. General Knowledge

This paper is designed to judge the candidate's knowledge and awareness related to current events. This section includes papers from historical, geographical and economic importance, with special reference to Haryana.

  1. Viva-Voce:

The Viva-voce section is included to test the personal qualities of the test-takers. This test is included to test the candidates’ awareness, intelligence, and general outlook. Importance will also be paid towards the physical appearance of the candidate. Vice Voce will be taken in Hindi or in English based upon the option selected by the candidates.
