BPSC 72nd CCE Exam Pattern 2026

BPSC 72nd CCE exam pattern for 2026 follows the same three stage structure as earlier cycles, with one change in how the Optional Subject is scored this year.

Question Type Objective (MCQ)
Total Questions 150
Total Marks 150

BPSC 2026 Mains Pattern

Paper Marks Nature
General Hindi 100 Qualifying, minimum 30% required
Essay 300 Merit, Descriptive
General Studies Paper 1 300 Merit, Descriptive
General Studies Paper 2 300 Merit, Descriptive
Optional Subject 300 Qualifying, Objective type
Interview 120 Merit

Note: Starting this cycle, Optional Subject in BPSC 72nd Mains has become an objective, qualifying paper and its 300 marks are no longer added to the merit list. Final merit for BPSC 2026 is calculated out of 1,020 marks, combining General Studies Paper 1, General Studies Paper 2, Essay and the Interview.

BPSC 2026 Marking Scheme

BPSC 2026 marking scheme carries one notable update this cycle, the addition of Option E on the OMR sheet, alongside the usual negative marking rule.

Response Marks Awarded
Correct answer Plus 1 mark
Wrong answer Minus 1/3 mark
Option E marked (Not Attempted) 0 marks, no penalty
Question left blank without marking Option E Minus 1/3 mark

Each BPSC 2026 Prelims question now carries five options, A to D plus Option E for Not Attempted. Marking Option E is the only way to skip a question without a penalty, so a row left completely blank is treated the same as a wrong answer.

BPSC 2026 Important Topics

BPSC 2026 important topics below are drawn from the official syllabus and the subject wise pattern seen in previous year Prelims.

Subject/Area Focus Areas
History Ancient, medieval and modern India, Bihar specific history and movements
Geography Physical and Bihar geography, rivers, natural resources
Polity Indian Constitution, governance, Panchayati Raj
Economy Indian economy, Bihar economy, government schemes
General Science Basics of Physics, Chemistry and Biology
Current Affairs National, international and Bihar current affairs
Bihar Specific Topics Bihar history, geography, economy and government schemes
General Mental Ability Basic reasoning and mental ability questions

Recommended Attempt Strategy for BPSC Prelims

BPSC 2026 attempt strategy should account for the 1/3 negative marking and the new Option E rule, both of which change how guesswork should be handled.

  • Attempt General Science, Current Affairs and Bihar Specific sections first, since these usually carry direct, scoring, recall based questions.
  • Use Option E for questions you genuinely do not want to answer, rather than leaving the row blank, since an unmarked blank now carries the same penalty as a wrong answer.
  • Avoid pure guesswork on questions where you cannot eliminate at least two options, as 1/3 negative marking can offset gains from random attempts.
  • Reserve the last 15 to 20 minutes only for review and OMR verification, since Prelims is a qualifying stage and accuracy matters more than attempting every question.
  • Revise Bihar GK closer to the exam date, as it consistently forms a large, differentiating share of the paper compared to generic national GK.

BPSC 2026 preparation can continue using the study notes and mock tests available, covering Bihar GK, General Studies, and the latest 72nd CCE pattern. Candidates can also revisit the previous year paper collection below to compare question trends across earlier BPSC cycles and get familiar with the difficulty level before the 72nd CCE Prelims.
