Question

X and Y are the midpoints of sides AB and AC, respectively, of triangle ABC. If BC = 9 cm, AB = 11 cm and AC = 14 cm, then what is the ratio of the perimeters of trapezium XBCY to triangle ABC to triangle AXY?

RRB Group D 2025 Question Paper (9-Aug-2026) (Shift 1)
The correct answer is

26 : 34 : 17

X and Y are midpoints of AB and AC, so by the midpoint theorem XY is parallel to BC and XY = BC/2 = 9/2 = 4.5 cm.

Triangle AXY is similar to triangle ABC with ratio 1 : 2, so perimeter of AXY = (perimeter of ABC)/2.

Perimeter of triangle ABC = 9 + 11 + 14 = 34 cm, so perimeter of AXY = 17 cm.

Perimeter of trapezium XBCY = XB + BC + CY + YX = 11/2 + 9 + 14/2 + 9/2 = 5.5 + 9 + 7 + 4.5 = 26 cm.

Ratio (XBCY : ABC : AXY) = 26 : 34 : 17.

Hence, the answer is 26 : 34 : 17.
