Question

With reference to Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon and the Param Vir Chakra, consider the following statements.

1. He was the first individual from the Indian Air Force to be awarded India’s highest gallantry award, the Param Vir Chakra.

2. The Param Vir Chakra is octagonal in shape, made of silver, and bears a single Vajra with the Ashoka Chakra embossed at the centre.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

The correct answer is

1 only

Statement 1 is correct. Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon of No. 18 Squadron defended Srinagar airfield against Pakistani Sabre jets on 14 December 1971 and was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra. He remains the first and only Indian Air Force recipient of the award.

Statement 2 is incorrect. The Param Vir Chakra is a circular medal of bronze, not an octagonal silver one. It carries four replicas of Indra’s Vajra around the State Emblem of India at the centre, not a single Vajra with the Ashoka Chakra.

So only the first statement is correct.

Hence, the answer is 1 only.
