The Buddha’s foster mother and maternal aunt, Mahapajapati Gotami, raised him after the death of his mother Mahamaya.
She requested admission to the monastic order and, after the intercession of Ananda, the Buddha permitted women to join; she thus became the first woman ordained as a bhikkhuni and led the order of nuns.
Khema, Uppalavanna and Dhammadinna were later eminent nuns known for wisdom, psychic power and preaching, but they joined after her.
