Prevalence in Northern Plains and Northeast India

The Northern Plains and northeastern states of India predominantly feature clustered settlements. This is due to several factors:

• Northern Plains: These fertile river valleys offer rich agricultural land, abundant water resources (rivers, groundwater), and well-developed irrigation systems. Clustering facilitates efficient farming, access to water, and community interaction.
• Northeastern States: While terrain varies, settlements often cluster in valleys, near water sources, or on gentler slopes suitable for agriculture. Historically, defense and social cohesion also encouraged compact living.

The concentration of resources and the need for social and economic cooperation make clustered settlements the most common form in these regions.
