To determine the correct option that reflects the characteristics of a Local Area Network (LAN) and the role of Ethernet within it, let's analyze each statement:

1. The first option claims that a LAN always requires Gigabit Ethernet and is insecure due to open access. This is incorrect because LANs do not necessarily require Gigabit Ethernet; they can function with various Ethernet standards including 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps. Additionally, LAN security depends on implementation and does not inherently allow open access.
2. The second option suggests that Ethernet in a LAN provides low-speed data transfer and uses public Internet infrastructure. This is false because Ethernet in a LAN typically provides high-speed data transfer and is used for local network communication, not over public Internet infrastructure.
3. The third option states that LANs are designed for long-distance communication and use Ethernet for wireless exchange. This is incorrect. LANs are designed for short-distance communication within a limited area, typically using wired connections (Ethernet), and wireless LANs use standards like Wi-Fi, not Ethernet for wireless data exchange.
4. The fourth option correctly states that Ethernet is a standard governing how devices in a LAN communicate via wired connections, supporting speeds from 10 Mbps to 1000 Mbps. This is true as Ethernet defines the protocols necessary for communication and provides the versatility in speed based on network requirements.

The correct answer is: Ethernet is a standard that governs how devices in a LAN communicate via wired connections, supporting speeds from 10 Mbps to 1000 Mbps. This reflects the accurate characteristics and role of Ethernet within a LAN setup.
