Public Interest Litigation (PIL) allows any public-spirited person to approach the court on behalf of those unable to seek justice themselves, relaxing the traditional rule of locus standi.

Through PIL the judiciary takes a proactive role in protecting rights and directing the executive, which is the essence of Judicial Activism.

Judicial Restraint is the opposite approach, where courts defer to the legislature and executive, while Judicial Absolutism and Judicial Passivism are not the recognised terms for this proactive practice.
