Which of the following is an example of application software?
Spreadsheet program
Software is broadly divided into two categories: system software, which manages and operates the computer's own hardware and provides a platform for other programs to run, and application software, which is designed to help the end user carry out specific tasks.
A spreadsheet program is used directly by the user to organise data, perform calculations, and create charts — this makes it a clear example of application software.
An operating system, a device driver, and the BIOS are all examples of system software: the operating system manages hardware and resources for all programs, a device driver lets the operating system communicate with a specific hardware component, and the BIOS initialises hardware during startup — none of these are tools the end user runs to accomplish a personal task.
