Question

Which of the following are alternative names for the independent variable (usually denoted by x) in linear regression analysis ?

(i) The regressor

(ii) The regressand

(iii) The causal variable

(iv) The effect variable

The correct answer is

(i) and (iii) only

In linear regression \(y = a + bx\), the independent variable x is the one used to explain or predict y.

It is called the regressor (also predictor or explanatory variable) and the causal variable, since it is taken as the cause of change in y. So (i) and (iii) are alternative names for x.

The regressand and the effect variable are names for the dependent variable y, so (ii) and (iv) do not describe x.

Hence, the answer is (i) and (iii) only.
