Which Article of the Indian Constitution abolishes “Untouchability” and forbids its practice in any form ?
Article 17
Articles 14 to 18 of Part III of the Constitution form the group of fundamental rights known as the Right to Equality.
Article 17 states that “Untouchability” is abolished and its practice in any form is forbidden; the enforcement of any disability arising out of untouchability is an offence punishable in accordance with law. Parliament gave effect to it through the Untouchability (Offences) Act, 1955, later renamed the Protection of Civil Rights Act.
Article 14 guarantees equality before the law and equal protection of the laws, Article 15 prohibits discrimination on grounds of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth, and Article 19 protects six freedoms such as speech and movement. None of them abolishes untouchability, so “None of the above” is also ruled out.
