Which Amendment to the Constitution abolished the two seats that were reserved for the Anglo-Indian community ?
104th
The 104th Constitutional Amendment Act, 2019 discontinued the nomination of Anglo-Indian members — option 4.
What the amendment did. It made two changes at once, both to provisions that carried an expiry date:
| Provision | Before | After the 104th Amendment |
|---|---|---|
| Article 334 — reservation of seats for SCs and STs in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies | Due to end on 25 January 2020 | Extended by ten years, to 25 January 2030 |
| Articles 331 and 333 — nomination of Anglo-Indians | Two members in the Lok Sabha, one in a State Assembly | Discontinued with effect from 25 January 2020 |
Why the seats existed. Articles 331 and 333 allowed the President to nominate up to two members of the Anglo-Indian community to the Lok Sabha, and a Governor to nominate one to a State Assembly, if the community was not adequately represented. The provision was originally meant to last ten years, but it was renewed repeatedly. It was allowed to lapse in 2020 on the ground that the community’s position no longer required a nominated seat — a decision the government defended in Parliament using the 2011 Census figure for the community.
Distinguishing the other amendments — each is a standard examination fact.
| Amendment | Subject |
|---|---|
| 100th (2015) | Land boundary agreement with Bangladesh — exchange of enclaves |
| 102nd (2018) | Constitutional status for the National Commission for Backward Classes |
| 104th (2019) | Extended SC/ST reservation; ended Anglo-Indian nomination |
| 108th | Only a Bill — the Women’s Reservation Bill of 2008, which lapsed and was never enacted as the 108th Amendment |
Option 1 is the sharpest distractor for exactly that reason: candidates remember the number 108 from the Women’s Reservation Bill and forget that it never became an amendment.
Hence, the answer is the 104th Amendment.
