India set up its first Export Processing Zone at Kandla in the Kutch district of Gujarat in 1965. It was also the first such zone anywhere in Asia.
Kandla was chosen because it already had a major port built after Partition to replace Karachi, so exporters had ready sea access. The zone offered duty-free import of inputs and a single-window clearance so that units could manufacture purely for export.
