Question

When would a solid die be unsuitable for threading work?

The correct answer is

When slight size adjustments are needed

A solid die is machined as a single fixed piece, so its thread-cutting diameter cannot be changed once made.

When a thread needs to be cut slightly oversize or undersize for a good fit, the die must be opened or closed a little.

A solid die offers no such adjustment, so it cannot fine-tune the thread size; a split or adjustable die is used instead.

It still works fine for threading steel rods, for hand operation, and when held in a die stock.

Hence, the answer is when slight size adjustments are needed.
