In Mendel's classical pea-plant experiments, height is controlled by a single gene with two alleles: T (tall) which is dominant and t (short) which is recessive.

A recessive phenotype is expressed only when both alleles carry the recessive form, i.e. the plant is homozygous recessive.

Combinations TT and Tt both contain at least one dominant T allele, so those plants appear tall; only tt produces the short phenotype.

Hence, the short phenotype in pea plants is expressed by the allele combination tt.
