Loop Fingerprint: Understanding Type Lines

In fingerprint analysis, specific features define pattern types. A loop fingerprint is characterized by ridges that enter from one side, recurve, and exit from the same side.

Defining Key Fingerprint Ridges

The pattern area of a fingerprint is the central portion containing loops, whorls, or arches. This area is enclosed or defined by specific ridges.

• Type lines are the principal ridges that run from the Delta towards the edge of the pattern area. In loop patterns, these two diverging ridges surround the core and define the limits of the pattern area.
• The Delta is a specific type of ridge formation, often triangular, found in loop and whorl patterns. It is usually located below and slightly to the left or right of the center of the pattern. Type lines flow around the delta(s).
• Radial lines refer to ridges originating from the thumb side (radius bone) of the hand, while Ulnar lines originate from the little finger side (ulna bone). This describes the direction of ridge flow, not the enclosing ridges.
• Spike lines is not a standard term used in fingerprint pattern classification.

Therefore, the two diverging ridges surrounding the pattern area of a loop are known as Type lines.
