Retroviruses are a distinct group of viruses known for their unique method of replication. The key characteristic defining a retrovirus is the type of genetic material it carries within its viral particle.
The genetic material, or genome, of retroviruses is not DNA, but rather RNA. Specifically, most retroviruses possess a diploid genome consisting of two identical single strands of RNA.
Upon infecting a host cell, the retrovirus uses a special enzyme called reverse transcriptase. This enzyme performs a critical function: it synthesizes a DNA copy from the viral RNA genome. This process is the reverse of the usual flow of genetic information (DNA to RNA) and is how retroviruses integrate their genetic material into the host cell's DNA, allowing them to replicate.
Therefore, the defining genetic component that sets retroviruses apart is their RNA genome.
