Question

The average sale of cars by a dealer per day in the month of March, other than on Saturdays and Sundays, is 177. The average sale of cars per day on Sundays is 151. What is the average sale of cars per day on Saturdays, if the first Saturday is on the 3rd of March and average sale of cars per day for the whole month is 148?

The correct answer is

18

March has 31 days. If the first Saturday is on 3rd March, the Saturdays are 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 (5 days) and the Sundays are 4, 11, 18 and 25 (4 days).

So the remaining days (other than Saturdays and Sundays) = 31 – 5 – 4 = 22 days.

Total sale for the month = 148 × 31 = 4588 cars. Sale on the 22 other days = 177 × 22 = 3894 cars, and sale on Sundays = 151 × 4 = 604 cars.

Sale on the 5 Saturdays = 4588 – 3894 – 604 = 90 cars, so the per-day figure for Saturdays = \(\frac{90}{5} = 18\).

Check: 3894 + 604 + 5 × 18 = 3894 + 604 + 90 = 4588, and 4588 ÷ 31 = 148, which is the given figure for the whole month.

Hence, 18.
