Question

The average age of a husband and his wife was 20 years at the time of their marriage. After 6 years, they have a 2 -year old child. Find the present average age of the family.

The correct answer is 18 years

Given:

At the time of marriage, the average age of a husband and his wife was 20 years.

After 6 years, they have a 2-year-old child.

Concept Used:

Average = Sum of components / Number of components

Calculation:

Total age at the time of their marriage = 20 × 2

⇒ 40 years

Now their total age = 40 + 6 + 6

⇒ 52 years

Total age of the family = 52 + 2 = 54 years

Average age = 54/3

⇒ 18 years

∴ The current average age of the family is 18 years.
