Question

The 7-digit number 236A3B9 is divisible by 3. Find the least possible value of (A+B).

This question was previously asked in
RRB Technician 2026 Grade 3 Question Paper (7-Oct-2026) (Shift 3)
The correct answer is

1

A number is divisible by 3 when the sum of its digits is divisible by 3.

Sum of known digits of 236A3B9: \( 2+3+6+3+9=23 \), so the digit sum is \( 23+A+B \).

The next multiple of 3 after 23 is 24, so the smallest possible value is \( A+B=24-23=1 \) (for example A = 1, B = 0).

A + B = 0 would give a digit sum of 23, which is not divisible by 3.

Hence, the least possible value of (A + B) is 1.
