One of the major features of the World Wide Web is the capability to create links between pages. These links are often viewed as analogues of citations in scientific publications (e.g. ROUSSEAU, 1997; BJORNEBORN & INGWERSEN, 2001; CRONIN, 2001). Links can lead to a different site or may lead to a page in the same site. Links for which the source and the target of the page are within the same site or domain are called self-links. Instead of counting self-links, we count self-sitations - the number of pages on the site having a link or links pointing to the same site. The difference between self-links and self-sitations is that for self-sitations a page with several self-links is counted with multiplicity one. The reason for counting self-sitations instead of self-links is technical: commercial search engines report the number of pages with self-links and not the number of self-links. The term-sitation has been coined by ROUSSEAU (1997). In this paper we develop the measures self-linking and self-linked, which correspond to the classical measures for journals : self-citing and self-cited. We calculate these rates for a number of academic institutions on the Web. Self-links seems to be more problematic than self-citations (of authors in scientific publications), because self-links are often inserted for navigational purposes.
