Primarily, the fossil fuels are composed of :
Carbon and Hydrogen
Fossil fuels such as coal, petroleum and natural gas were formed from buried plant and animal remains subjected to heat and pressure over millions of years.
They are essentially hydrocarbons. Natural gas is mainly methane (CH4), crude petroleum contains about 83–87% carbon and 10–14% hydrogen, and coal is mostly carbon with a smaller amount of hydrogen.
Their energy comes from oxidising this carbon and hydrogen to CO2 and H2O during combustion.
Nitrogen, oxygen and sulphur are present only as minor constituents or impurities; for example, sulphur gives rise to SO2 pollution, but it is not a primary component.
Hence, Carbon and Hydrogen.
