Question

Read the passage given below and answer the questions based on your understanding of the passage :
One of the major features of the World Wide Web is the capability to create links between pages. These links are often viewed as analogues of citations in scientific publications (e.g. ROUSSEAU, 1997; BJORNEBORN & INGWERSEN, 2001; CRONIN, 2001). Links can lead to a different site or may lead to a page in the same site. Links for which the source and the target of the page are within the same site or domain are called self-links. Instead of counting self-links, we count self-sitations - the number of pages on the site having a link or links pointing to the same site. The difference between self-links and self-sitations is that for self-sitations a page with several self-links is counted with multiplicity one. The reason for counting self-sitations instead of self-links is technical: commercial search engines report the number of pages with self-links and not the number of self-links. The term-sitation has been coined by ROUSSEAU (1997). In this paper we develop the measures self-linking and self-linked, which correspond to the classical measures for journals : self-citing and self-cited. We calculate these rates for a number of academic institutions on the Web. Self-links seems to be more problematic than self-citations (of authors in scientific publications), because self-links are often inserted for navigational purposes.

Links in domain can lead to
a. different site on www
b. page in the same site
c. page in the different sites
d. all available e-documents

The correct answer is
a and b are correct.

Understanding Link Destinations in a Domain

Links on the internet, specifically referred to here as "links in a domain," serve to connect web resources. Let's analyze the possible destinations:

  • Links to Different Sites: Hyperlinks commonly direct users to entirely different websites hosted on the World Wide Web (WWW). This is a fundamental aspect of internet connectivity. Thus, option 'a' is correct.
  • Links Within the Same Site: Websites are composed of multiple pages. Links are frequently used internally to navigate between these pages, allowing users to explore content within the same website. Thus, option 'b' is correct.
  • Broad E-documents: While links *can* point to various electronic documents (like PDFs), the statement "all available e-documents" is too general and not a direct or primary function of typical domain links. Links are specific pointers, not a universal index. Thus, option 'd' is not necessarily correct in this context.

Based on the analysis, links within a domain can point to different sites on the WWW (option a) and pages within the same site (option b). Therefore, the correct combination is 'a and b'.
