The correct answer is
high temperature and heavy rainfall

Laterite Soil Development Conditions

Laterite soils are primarily found in tropical and subtropical regions. Their formation depends significantly on the prevailing climatic conditions:

  • High Temperature: Regions with consistently high temperatures accelerate the weathering processes crucial for soil formation.
  • Heavy Rainfall: Areas receiving abundant rainfall, often characterized by distinct wet seasons, are necessary for the process of leaching.

The combination of high temperatures and heavy rainfall leads to intense leaching. This process removes soluble materials like silica and plant nutrients, leaving behind insoluble iron and aluminum oxides. These oxides give Laterite soil its characteristic reddish color and often a lateritic (brick-like) consistency when dried.

Consequently, Laterite soil develops in areas characterized by high temperature and heavy rainfall.
