Meiosis I: Anaphase I Explained
The key event described – the separation of homologous chromosomes while sister chromatids remain attached at the centromere – occurs specifically during Anaphase I of meiosis.
Understanding Meiosis I Phases
- Prophase I: Homologous chromosomes pair up (synapsis) and exchange genetic material (crossing over). They do not separate.
- Metaphase I: Pairs of homologous chromosomes align along the cell's equator (metaphase plate). Separation has not yet occurred.
- Anaphase I: This is the critical stage where homologous chromosomes are pulled apart towards opposite poles of the cell. Importantly, the sister chromatids of each chromosome remain intact and attached at their centromeres.
- Telophase I: Chromosomes arrive at the poles, and the cell divides into two haploid daughter cells. The separation of homologous chromosomes is completed by this stage.
