In Darcy’s law v = ki, ‘k’ stands for ........................
Coefficient of permeability
Darcy's law describes laminar flow of water through a porous medium: \(v = ki\), or in terms of discharge \(Q = kiA\).
Here v is the discharge (Darcy or superficial) velocity, i is the hydraulic gradient \(\left(i = \dfrac{\Delta h}{L}\right)\), the head loss per unit length of flow, and A is the cross-sectional area.
The proportionality constant k is the coefficient of permeability (hydraulic conductivity). It has the units of velocity (m/s or m/day) and expresses how easily the medium allows water to pass.
Porosity does not appear in Darcy's equation; it is used only to convert the discharge velocity into the actual seepage velocity, \(v_s = \dfrac{v}{n}\).
Hence, Coefficient of permeability.
