In a typical plant cell, which organelle is primarily responsible for turgor pressure?

HTET 2025 Level 1 PRT Question Paper (5-Jul-2026)
The correct answer is

Central vacuole

The large central vacuole of a mature plant cell is filled with cell sap and is enclosed by the tonoplast membrane. As water enters the vacuole by osmosis, it pushes the cytoplasm and plasma membrane firmly against the cell wall, generating turgor pressure that keeps the cell rigid and the plant upright. The nucleus, mitochondria, and Golgi apparatus carry out genetic control, respiration, and secretion respectively, and are not directly responsible for turgidity.
