Question

In a certain code language, A + B means 'A is the wife of B', A − B means 'A is the sister of B', A × B means 'A is the father of B' and A ÷ B means 'A is the brother of B'. How is M related to S if 'M × N − O + P ÷ S'?

The correct answer is

Brother's wife's father

Decode each symbol in turn using the given code.

M × N means M is the father of N.

N − O means N is the sister of O, so N and O share the same parents; therefore M is also the father of O.

O + P means O is the wife of P, so P is O's husband and M is P's father-in-law.

P ÷ S means P is the brother of S, so from S's viewpoint P is her/his brother and O is that brother's wife.

M, being the father of O, is therefore the father of S's brother's wife.

Hence, M is the Brother's wife's father to S.
