Question

Find the weighted mean of 15, 20 and 25 with weights 2, 3 and 5, respectively.

This question was previously asked in
RRB Technician 2026 Grade 3 Question Paper (6-Oct-2026) (Shift 2)
The correct answer is

21.5

Weighted mean = \(\frac{\sum w_i x_i}{\sum w_i}\), where each value is multiplied by its weight.

\(\sum w_i x_i\) = 15 × 2 + 20 × 3 + 25 × 5 = 30 + 60 + 125 = 215, and \(\sum w_i\) = 2 + 3 + 5 = 10.

Weighted mean = \(\frac{215}{10} = 21.5\).

Check: the deviations from 21.5 weighted by 2, 3 and 5 are 2 × (–6.5) + 3 × (–1.5) + 5 × 3.5 = –13 – 4.5 + 17.5 = 0, as required for a mean.

Hence, 21.5.
