The correct answer is

Third to the left

This problem requires us to determine the seating arrangement of eight people (A-H) around a circular table based on specific conditions, and then find the position of C relative to D.

Arranging People Around the Table

  • Setup: 8 people, circular table. A & B face center. C, D, E, F, G, H face outside.
  • H & A: 'A is second to the right of H'. H faces outside, so right is counter-clockwise. Placing H at seat 1, A is at seat 7 (1 -> CCW 8 -> CCW 7).
  • A & B: 'B sits third to the left of A'. A faces center, so left is counter-clockwise. Placing A at seat 7, B is at seat 4 (7 -> CCW 6 -> CCW 5 -> CCW 4).
  • G & D: 'D sits second to the right of G'. G faces outside, so right is counter-clockwise. Possible (G, D) pairs: (2, 8), (5, 3), (8, 6).
  • G's Neighbors: 'G is neither an immediate neighbour of B nor A'. B is at seat 4 (neighbors 3, 5). A is at seat 7 (neighbors 6, 8). G cannot be at 3, 5, 6, or 8.
  • G & D Placement: Only pair (G=2, D=8) satisfies the neighbor condition for G.
  • E & F: 'E and F are immediate neighbours and face outside'. Remaining seats are 3, 5, 6. E and F occupy adjacent seats 5 and 6.
  • C Placement: The last person, C, must be in the last available seat, which is seat 3.

Final Seating Configuration

Seat (Clockwise) Person Facing
1 H Outside
2 G Outside
3 C Outside
4 B Center
5 E / F Outside
6 F / E Outside
7 A Center
8 D Outside

Position of C Relative to D

  • D is at seat 8, facing outside. C is at seat 3.
  • For a person facing outside, their left is in the clockwise direction.
  • Counting clockwise from D (seat 8) to reach C (seat 3): Seat 8 -> Seat 1 (1st left) -> Seat 2 (2nd left) -> Seat 3 (3rd left).
  • Therefore, C is positioned third to the left of D.
