The term "Devanampriya" is a significant historical title deeply associated with one of ancient India's most powerful emperors. Understanding this term helps us learn more about the ruler who adopted it and his reign.

What is Devanampriya?

The word "Devanampriya" (sometimes spelled "Devanampiya") translates to "Beloved of the Gods" or "He who is dear to the Gods". This honorific title was frequently used in ancient Indian inscriptions.

Devanampriya and Emperor Ashoka

Emperor Ashoka, often simply known as Ashoka, was a ruler of the Mauryan Empire who reigned from 268 to 232 BCE. He is widely regarded as one of the most significant figures in Indian history due to his efforts in spreading Buddhism across Asia and his unique form of governance based on Dhamma (Dharma).

• Many of Ashoka's rock and pillar edicts, which are scattered across the Indian subcontinent, use the title "Devanampriya Piyadasi" (Piyadasi means "He who looks with affection" or "of pleasing appearance").
• Initially, the identity of "Devanampriya Piyadasi" was a mystery. However, an inscription discovered at Maski in Karnataka clearly states: "Devanampriya Ashoka". This inscription confirmed that "Devanampriya" was indeed a title used by Emperor Ashoka.
