Why deserts lie where they do. Most of the great hot deserts — Sahara, Thar, Arabian, Kalahari, Australian — lie between about 20° and 30° north and south, under the descending limbs of the Hadley cells, where air that rose at the equator sinks, warms and dries. Others are rain-shadow deserts behind mountains, like the Gobi and the Patagonian; and a few, like the Atacama and the Namib, are coastal deserts beside cold ocean currents that chill the air and suppress rainfall.
Note on the Kalahari and the Namib. They are often confused because both are in south-western Africa. The Namib is the true coastal desert along the Atlantic, one of the oldest deserts in the world; the Kalahari lies inland, and gets enough rain in places to support grass and scrub.
