“He ________ (complete) his home work before I ________ him”.

TNPSC Group 2 2026 Prelims Question Paper (01-Nov-2026)
The correct answer is

completed, met

When two past actions are linked by “before”, both are usually expressed in the past tense, because “before” itself makes the order of the actions clear (the past perfect “had completed” is also possible but is not offered).

Both actions — his completing the homework and my meeting him — happened in the past, so both verbs take the simple past: “He completed his home work before I met him.”

“completed, would meet” uses the future-in-the-past for an event that actually happened, which does not fit a plain statement of fact. “completed, meet” mixes a past verb with a present verb, breaking the sequence of tenses. “completes, meet” puts both in the present and does not match a completed past event.

completed, met option is correct.
