Number of Land Capability Classes

The standard land capability classification system defines a total of 8 classes. These are grouped into subclasses (I-VIII) based on the type of limitation.

• Classes I-IV are suitable for cultivation.

Factors Determining Land Capability

• Rooting depth: Shallow soils restrict plant growth.

Class Limitations Explained

Each class represents increasing limitations:

• Class I: Very severe limitations, suitable for most crops.
• Class II: Severe limitations, requires good management practices.
• Class III: Very severe limitations, requires specialized management.
• Class IV: Extremely severe limitations, only suitable for limited use.
• Class V: Suitable for grazing, pasture, or forestry; limitations prevent cropping.
• Class VI: Suitable for grazing, pasture, or forestry; steepness or other limitations are severe.
• Class VII: Very steep, shallow, or otherwise unsuitable for cultivation; limited use for pasture or forestry.
• Class VIII: Land suited for wildlife, recreation, or aesthetic purposes; major physical limitations prevent agricultural use.
