Secure attachment describes a healthy bond where a baby trusts their caregiver. This bond influences how the baby behaves, especially during separations and reunions.

Behavioral Indicators

Babies with a secure attachment style typically exhibit specific behaviors when their primary caregiver leaves the room:

• They may become distressed or upset by the caregiver's departure. This distress is a sign that they value the caregiver's presence and notice their absence.
• They often actively show their displeasure, which can include crying or protesting. This indicates they are aware of the separation and desire the caregiver's return.
• Crucially, upon the caregiver's return, these babies are easily soothed and comforted. They seek contact and quickly re-establish positive interaction, showing trust that their needs will be met.

Contrasting behaviors, like indifference upon departure (avoidant) or extreme distress mixed with conflicting behaviors upon return (disorganized), are indicative of different attachment styles.

Therefore, crying and protesting when the mother leaves is a key indicator of secure attachment, as it reflects a healthy distress response coupled with the expectation of the caregiver's return and availability.
