According to Muslim System of Education, ‘Madarsa’ is supposed to be the centre of ................ .
Higher Education
Education during the medieval (Muslim) period in India was organised at two levels: the maktab and the madarsa. The word madarsa comes from the Arabic root “dars”, meaning a lesson or lecture.
The maktab was attached to a mosque and gave primary education: reading, writing, elementary arithmetic and recitation of the Quran. The madarsa was the centre of higher education, where learned teachers taught theology, Islamic law, Arabic and Persian literature, logic, philosophy, history, medicine and astronomy. Many were founded by rulers in cities such as Delhi, Agra and Bidar.
Primary education was the role of the maktab, not the madarsa. Secondary education was not a separate stage in this two-tier system, and technical education in crafts was usually passed on through apprenticeship in workshops rather than in madarsas. In the Muslim system, the madarsa stood for higher education.
