Question

A shopkeeper offers two successive discounts of 15% and y% on the marked price of an article. If the final selling price is 68% of the marked price, what is the value of y?

The correct answer is

20

With successive discounts, each discount is applied to the price left after the previous one: SP = MP × \(\left(1 - \frac{15}{100}\right)\left(1 - \frac{y}{100}\right)\).

Take MP = 100. After 15% discount the price is 85, and the final price is 68, so \(85\left(1 - \frac{y}{100}\right) = 68\).

\(1 - \frac{y}{100} = \frac{68}{85} = 0.8\), so \(\frac{y}{100} = 0.2\) and y = 20.

Check: 100 → 85 after 15% off, and 20% of 85 = 17, so 85 – 17 = 68, i.e. 68% of the marked price.

Hence, 20.
