In June 2026, the Central Government extended the tenure of which two of India's oldest inter-state water dispute tribunals by one year?
Ravi and Beas Tribunal & Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal
Inter-state water dispute tribunals are set up by the Central Government under the Inter-State River Water Disputes Act, 1956, to settle disputes between states over sharing river waters.
The Ravi and Beas Tribunal was constituted in 1986 for the dispute among Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan, and the second Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal was set up in 2004 for the Krishna basin states. Both are still functioning, which makes them among the oldest tribunals in existence, and in June 2026 the Centre extended their tenure by one year.
The Godavari and Narmada tribunals gave their final awards long ago, around 1980, and the Cauvery tribunal's award was followed by the setting up of the Cauvery Water Management Authority in 2018, so their tenure is not being extended.
The Vansadhara and Mahadayi tribunals were constituted around 2010 and the Mahanadi tribunal in 2018, so they are much newer than the Ravi and Beas and Krishna tribunals.
Hence, Ravi and Beas Tribunal & Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal.
